Loss of the Night (2010-2014)

The illumination of the night caused by artificial light

The photo above shows a bright night sky, illuminated by an abundance of lights. Because light has positive connotations with security, wealth and modernity, humans tend to illuminate their environment intensively. Although artificial light provides countless advantages to humans, it also has its dark side. Over the last decades, light pollution, the pollution of naturally dark skies by artificial light, has intensified, without regard to its potential impacts on humans and the environment. A growing number of studies is indicating far reaching impact of artificial light at night on the environment and humans. Light pollution research involves interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary science communication to provide holistic approaches and a differential study of the effects of artificial light at night (ALAN).
Within the interdisciplinary BMBF project "Loss of the Night" (2010-2014), scientists examined for the first time at national level the ecological, health as well as cultural and socio-economic effects, but also the causes for the increasing ALAN. Based on the research results from the project "Loss of the Night" and other projects, solutions for modern lighting concepts and sustainable technologies are developed.
This homepage is intended to increase the awareness about the problem of light pollution and the state of knowledge regarding possible lighting solutions. Would you like to contribute to decrease light pollution in your neighborhood? Then you will find recommendations and flyers on our website of the EU COST ACTION LoNNe. Furthermore you can become involved as a citizen scientist in using the Loss of the Night app or participating in the night time crime scene at our street lights (Tatort-Streetlight), in identifying the diversity of insects, which can get trapped in the light.

The first interdisciplinary research project about light pollution

The research project Loss of the Night was funded from 2010-2014 by
  • Berlin Senator for Economics, Technology and Research
Loss of the night was a partner of the Science Year 2012 for sustainable development of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research - Project EARTH Our Future.

The research group  was also part of the research platform MILIEU of Freie Universität Berlin

Loss of the night initiated the EU network LoNNe (Loss of the Night Network) to join venture for the scientifical analysis of light pollution. In the EU-COST Action ES1204 participate today parties from 18 countries.

Besides the scientific network, offers the citizen science platform STARS4ALL opportunities to get involved in projects and initiatives around the environmental problem of light pollution.

In a further framework, the EU Platform ACTION offers networking between citizen scientists who engage in issues of environmental pollutions. In addition to light pollution, environmental pollution includes air pollutants, plastics and other substances that disrupt our ecosystems and are released into the environment through poor management of our consumption.
