SP11: Light sources for sustainable illumination

Subproject 11 is carried out at the Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology in Greifswald (INP). The competences of the INP Greifswald are in the research on plasma lamps, like fluorescent lamps and high-pressure lamps. Furthermore the INP Greifswald contributed its expert knowledge in lighting technology. The main topic of SP11 was the design and photometric characterization of illumination setups for SP07, SP08, SP09 as well as SP13. The results of these projects were used to propose improved concepts for light distribution, light quality as well as time-controlled and dimmable illumination. The objective was the development of sustainable illumination, particularly for exterior lighting.

The project was involved in laboratory as well as in field experiments. As an example for laboratory studies SP09 "Light pollution – Effects on fish" is given here, where a natural illumination was required under laboratory conditions to investigate the effect of artificial lighting on physiological processes in fishes. In SP14 a photometric characterization and monitoring is needed for the test field.

The interdisciplinary character was the charm of this project, where on the one hand lighting technology can not replace biological studies and on the other hand the results of biologists afford conclusions in the light of technology – in terms of a sustainable illumination.

Scientist and leader of subproject is Dr. Steffen Franke
